The very first time I heard about the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law, I knew then that the law itself was a bad idea.
Now here we have another case where the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law is being used to justify another killing of an unarmed, black teenager.
Meet Michael Dunn.
He’s a 45 year-old Florida resident, who is now using the controversial law after a recent confrontation that turned fatal.
According to the authorities in Florida, 17 year old Jordan Russell Davis, a black teenager, and several friends were confronted by Dunn, a white man, who pulled along side the teens’ tinted SUV in the parking lot of a Jacksonville, Florida, gas station.
Davis and his friends were just leaving a Black Friday sale.
Dunn and his girlfriend were down in Jacksonville, Florida, for the wedding of his son. As Dunn’s girlfriend went inside the store, he asked the teens to turn the music down. After an exchange of words, he fired between 8 and 9 shot inside the vehicle several of which hit Davis, causing his death.
According to Dunn’s attorney, Robin Lemonidis, he saw a shotgun in the SUV, while the teens yelled threatening obscenities.
‘He said that he heard them say, “Kill that mother fucker, that mother fucker dead, you dead bitch”, and then he sees (sic) that much of the shotgun coming up over the rim of the SUV which sits higher than his Jetta’, said Lemonidis to reporters. And that’s all he sees are heavily tinted windows, which are up and the back windows which are down, and the car has at least for black men in it. And he doesn’t know how old anybody is, he doesn’t know anything, but he knows a shotgun when he sees one.”
The lawyer goes on to say, ‘He didn’t think he had harmed anybody and he just thought he had scared them off and he wanted to report it, but he didn’t want to go in a sense (sic) throwing himself to the wolves, in a strange city without representation.’
No weapons were found in Davis’ car.
Dunn claims that he also believe that the teenagers were going to tell their friends to kill him. He said that he didn’t believe that anyone was harmed even though he shot into a vehicle between 8 and 9 times.
Now, after the shooting, Dunn and his girlfriend high tailed the 159 miles back to his hotel in Brevard County, where he was arrested the next day.
I can’t believe that we are losing so many of our youth. David was a student at Samuel W. Wolfson High School, a magnet school in Duval County. He will be buried in his hometown of Marietta, Georgia. His family plans to start a foundation in his honor for at risk youth who have been victims of tragedy.
I have so many questions.
1. If the windows in SUV were so heavily tented, how could he see a shotgun through the tint?
2. Why did he shoot into a vehicle 8-9 times because the teens’ music was too loud?
3. At what time was his life in danger?Music cannot harm you.
Well … Not all music…
Michael Dunn has pled not guilty.
I think it’s about time to repeal this law…
Or arm everyone in the U.S. so it’s fair for everyone involved…
