Here in the United States, a new rule of the land is becoming ever so apparent.
And that rule is: Keep your eyes open at all times.
But some Americans haven’t gotten the memo yet.
Meet Darrell Brackett, 44, of Miami, Florida.
Brackett was driving with his girlfriend at 11:30 p.m. in Miami. They had just dropped off some guests after hosting a Christmas party/cookout.
Brackett’s car ran out of gas. He told his girlfriend to stay in the car as he trekked to the nearby U-Gas gas station to fill up a gas can with gas.
Brackett went into the station and paid for his gas and went out to the pumps to began pumping.
It was around this time when three unknown men walked up to Brackett.
The altercation/conversation that ensued is unclear but witnesses say that one of the men poured gasoline on Brackett and lit him ablaze.
Brackett began running through the gas station and down the street, while ablaze.
A Good Samaritan rushed to his side and pushed him to the ground, helping him roll in the dirt in an attempt to extinguish the flames.
‘If she hadn’t done that, he would have burned to death,’ said Brackett’s mother, Bridgett, during an emotional press conference Thursday.
Brackett was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s burn unit, where he is being treated for third-degree burns to most of his body, including his face, torso and legs.
‘He has no skin left on his body,’ Bridgett Brackett tearfully said.
Brackett was wearing hick cut-off jeans on the night of the attack, which protected his thighs from flames.
Since he was brought to the burn center’s ICU, Brackett’s condition has been upgraded from extremely critical to stable after doctors placed him in a medically induced coma.
Mrs Brackett said the first time she saw the 44-year-old, he was trashing on the bed. When she tried to speak to him, the man was unable to respond, although it appeared that he could hear her.
The victim remains under close observation out of concern the might develop an infection. According to his mother, doctors plan on using cadaver skin as graphs for her son.
Mrs Brackett said police told her that when officers arrived on the scene, her son kept repeating one thing about his attackers: ‘the only thing I did was ask a question, and they didn’t have to do this to me.’
Miami-Dade police are treating the case as possible attempted murder. So far, no arrests have been made in the fiery attack, and investigators have yet to find a motive.
Miami Herald reported that Brackett works for his girlfriend’s uncle’s landscaping company as a gardener and driver, and according to his mother, he has not done anything to deserve the attack. The woman described her only son as a fun-loving man who was minding his own business.
‘Nobody can imagine how a person could be so cruel to another human being for no reason,’ Brackett said.
This all began as a trip to the gas station.
It makes you wonder about the morality of people now days.
