Around 9a.m. this morning in Taft, California, classes were interrupted at Taft Union High School with the sound of gunfire.
The shooting took place in the Science Building at the school.
The Bakersfield Californian reports:
The student who was shot was flown to a hospital in Bakersfield, said Ray Pruitt, spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.
There was no immediate word on the victim’s condition. “We have a suspect in custody,” Pruitt said, adding that the person was believed to be a student.
The weapon used appears to be a shotgun, recovered by police.
The students and teachers inside the school hid in closets as the shooting happened. They kept in contact with family, friends, and media via phone and text message.
Parents said that a teacher was also shot, but his injuries were only minor.
Kern County Sheriff’s Department officials are going room-by-room to secure the school.
Reports indicate that the first person shot was airlifted to Kern Medical Center and the second person denied medical treatment.
23ABC News contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation officials and they said they will not comment on the situation.
