It was Friday, January 4th, afternoon when an unidentified mother from Loganville, Georgia heard a few knocks at her front door.
Knowing that she wasn’t expecting company, and thinking that it was probably a door-to-door salesman, she yelled to her nine year-old twins,’ Don’t answer!’
The visitor then began ringing the bell.
She still didn’t answer the door, nor did she allow the children to answer.
But the visitor didn’t leave. The ringing and knocking became persistent, so the mother called her husband at work.
“Get the kids and hide,” he told his wife.
As he dialed 911, his 37-year-old spouse, who works from home, collected the children, her .38 revolver, and hid with them in a crawlspace adjoining her office.
Deputies arrested 32-year-old Atlanta resident Paul Slater in connection with the break-in. He was most recently released from jail in August.
In the meantime, the visitor, now identified as Paul Ali Slater, 32, of Atlanta, Georgia, walked out to his vehicle to retrieve a crowbar. He returned to the three story residence on Henderson Ridge, and began to pry his way into the home.

After Slater gained entry into the home, he began to move from room to room, rummaging through the family’s belongings.
He then came to the door of the crawlspace.
He opened the door.
And there Slater stood, eye to eye with the mother, her twins, and her .38 revolver.
The mother fired until the gun was empty.
“She’s standing over him, and she realizes she’s fired all six rounds. And the guy’s telling her to quit shooting,” Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman said.
The woman ran to a neighbor’s home with her children. The intruder attempted to flee in his car but crashed into a wooded area and collapsed in a nearby driveway, Chapman said.
Slater managed to return to his vehicle, but his injuries left him unable to drive, and it wasn’t long before he crashed into a wooded area
Deputies arrested 32-year-old Atlanta resident Paul Slater in connection with the crime. Chapman said they found him on the ground saying, “Help me. I’m close to dying.” Slater was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment. Chapman said Slater was shot in the face and neck.
In February, Slater was arrested on simple battery charges, according to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office. He has been arrested six other times in the county since 2008.
“My wife is a hero. She protected her kids. She did what she was supposed to do as responsible, prepared gun owner,” Donnie Herman said.
He said he’s thankful for his family’s safety.
“Her life is saved, and her kids’ life is saved, and that’s all I’d like to say,” Herman said.

Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri learned from Chapman late Friday night that slater has been placed on a ventilator and suffers from punctured lungs, a punctured liver and a punctured stomach.
He said if Slater survives the night, doctors will try to operate in the morning to repair the damage.
Chapman said Slater has four exit wounds.
Slater is currently being charged with burglary.
